he presence of many illegal mines and quarries in North Sulawesi has caused concern among residents. They are especially concerned about the sand and gravel quarries (Galian C) in Tomohon city, South Bolaang Mongondow regency, Southeast Minahasa regency and other regions in the province.
Environmental observer Rignola Jamaludin said the laws on mining state that the government is the overseer. 'If they are illegal, they should be curbed by the government. What is happening now is that potential mines are being exploited,' said Rignola.
Impacts from illegal mining, he added, were definitely due to a lack of control. According to him, the mining activities should be organized, and, if need be, stopped.
'If not based on accurate calculations, the mines will have negative impacts, such as floods and landslides,' he added.
He urged the government to reorganize mining activities and provide counseling to illegal miners who are still operating.
