fter going after the leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the police are now targeting all 21 KPK investigators who they allege possess guns with expired licenses.
The National Police's Detectives Division Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso said the police investigation was still underway and the KPK investigators would be indicted for possessing illegal guns.
'I want them to be held as suspects as soon as possible so that the public will know whether the information is true or not and not base the information on assumption,' Budi said at the National Police headquarters on Tuesday.
He added that if evidence for the possession of illegal guns is in police hands, the 21 KPK investigators would be held as suspects.
However, he said that despite his position as chief detective, he would not intervene in the police investigators' ongoing investigation into the case.
He said that the police started probing the case after receiving a complaint from the public, but he declined to identify the complainant.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police investigators found out that the licenses of guns that were still in the hands of the KPK investigators had expired in 2011 and 2012.
'The possession of illegal guns is very dangerous and a serious law violation,' said Budi.
According to him, the KPK investigators can be indicted for violating the 1951 emergency law that carries a maximum 12-year prison sentence upon conviction.
KPK Chairman Abraham Samad and Deputy KPK Chairman Bambang Widjojanto have been named suspects in a fake document case and a fake testimony case, respectively, while two other deputies, Adnan Pandu Pradja and Zulkarnain, were reported to the police for separate past legal violations.
The 1999 anticorruption law stipulates that KPK leaders and investigators held as suspects for alleged legal violations must be dismissed.
The commission will have to halt its ongoing investigations into a great number of graft cases, if its leaders and investigators are dismissed for their suspect status.
Many sides have urged President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to appoint acting leaders to lead the commission while establishing a selection committee to select five clean and qualified permanent leaders. (rms)(+++)
