eputy Police Chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti has promised to repair the troubled relationship with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) after being sworn in as police chief.
Speaking to the national media following the announcement by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo of his promotion, Badrodin said he would work hard to repair the ties between the two law enforcement institutions to continue the fight against corruption.
'After internal consolidation in the police organization, we will repair the damaged relations between the two institutions because law enforcement, both at the KPK and the National Police, must not be disturbed,' he said in a live televised interview on Wednesday.
He added he was ready to undergo a confirmation hearing to win the House of Representatives' political endorsement for his nomination as police chief.
Badrodin, born in 1954 and graduating from the National Police Academy in 1982, was one of five three-star police officials proposed by the National Police Commission to the President to replace Gen. Sutarman as police chief. The President chose head of the police education institute, Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, but the latter's nomination triggered a nationwide polemic after he was named a graft suspect.
The President decided to cancel Budi's inauguration, despite a court verdict that invalidated his suspect status, and nominated Badrodin as new police chief candidate.
Further, the President also announced the appointment of Taufiqurrahman Ruki, Indriyanto Seno Adjie and Johan Budi as acting KPK leaders to replace KPK chairman Abraham Samad, deputy KPK chairman Bambang Widjojanto and retired deputy KPK chairman Busyro Muqoddas. Abraham and Bambang were suspended after the police named them suspects in two separate cases. The President will issue a presidential decree on the three acting KPK leaders' appointment later.
Legislators called on the President to give a comprehensive explanation about the changes to his policy on the police leadership.
'The President should give a political and sociological explanation to the House to avoid any new rift between the executive and legislative bodies,' Asrul Sani, a member of the House's Commission III on law, said.
Deputy House Speaker Fadli Zon concurred and said the law commission would likely screen Badrodin for the position as top cop after legislators completed their recess on March 22.(+++)
