P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has called on Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan to continue giving his best to the National Police despite his failure to become top cop.

'€œI decided Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan will continue to give his best to the National Police and be more professional in his service to the people,'€ kompas.com quoted the President as saying at the State Palace on Wednesday.

State Secretary Pratikno said Budi'€™s new position would be announced later.

'€œHe is still head of the police education institute. The appointment to a new position awaits a new decision,'€ he said.

Many sides have speculated that Budi could be appointed deputy police chief to replace Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who has been nominated police chief.

The President'€™s appointment of Badrodin as police chief candidate is expected to calm the escalating conflict between the police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) since Badrodin is seen as an acceptable figure to facilitate better cooperation between the two institutions in the fight against corruption.

The President was also expected to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (perppu) to appoint three acting KPK leaders to replace retired Buysro Mukoqdas, KPK chairman Abraham Samad and deputy KPK chairman Bambang Widjojanto.

Abraham and Bambang have had to be suspended since they have been declared suspects in two separate cases. (rms)(++++)
