hree new interim Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders promised on Friday to rebuild ties between the antigraft body and the National Police, ties that were damaged following President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's decision to nominate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the new police chief.
The three, Taufiequrachman Ruki, Johan Budi and Indriyanto Seno Adji, who were recently appointed by Jokowi in his effort 'to ensure the continuous work of the KPK', took an oath at the State Palace on Friday morning.
Taufiequrachman, the new KPK interim chairman, deemed such coordination as "a must".
"Without coordination, [all our work] cannot be carried out," he said after the inauguration ceremony.
The three replaced Bambang Widjojanto and Abraham Samad - two KPK leaders who have been named suspects by the police in a move many deemed as the criminalization of the KPK - and filled another seat left empty as Busyro Muqoddas' tenure had ended.
Jokowi has nominated current police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti as his new pick for National Police chief, replacing Budi who has been named a graft suspect by the KPK.
Johan concurred, saying that the KPK would first discuss internally how to strengthen the institution and later would focus on "rebuilding ties between the KPK and the police".
Badrodin, who also attended the ceremony, said the two institutions planned to hold a meeting to discuss the damaged relations between the two at police headquarters on Friday.
"First, we [the police and the KPK] must prioritize to settle the existing problem. Later, we will also build synergy for a better corruption eradication [effort]," he said. (***)
