Greater Jakarta: Man killed by train

J

AKARTA: A 67-year-old man, identified as Awigeno Soesanto, died after being hit by a train transporting coal on the railway track near Palmerah Station in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon.

According to Suparman, a witness, Awigeno was crossing the railway track and heading toward Palmerah Market after disembarking from a Kopaja bus, while the train was approaching Palmerah Station from Kebayoran Station in South Jakarta.

Suparman said the victim had been warned of the approaching train by people standing near the crossing boom gate. '€œHowever, the man looked toward Palmerah Station, but the train came from the other direction,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Another witness, Randi Indra, said as quoted by tempo.co that at the time two trains were passing the crossing. When the first train, a commuter train heading from Palmerah to Kebayoran, had passed, Awigeno quickly attempted to cross without looking in the opposite direction from where the coal train was approaching.

The accident resulted in heavy congestion on Jl. Tentara Pelajar, which runs parallel to the railway track and on nearby Jl. Gelora.

The Tanah Abang Police secured the scene before the body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta for an autopsy.
