National Police chief Gen
ational Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti has ordered Yogyakarta Police to coordinate with local religious leaders to prevent more church attacks in the area.
A group of unidentified persons attempted to burn down a church in Bantul district, Yogyakarta, early on Monday. The fire that had inflamed the church's door was successfully put out by residents before it could spread to a larger part of the building.
'[Yogyakarta Police] should talk to Muslim organizations to explain the incident. Let's preserve interfaith harmony,' he said on Wednesday.
The arson incident happened only days after a fatal riot in Tolikara, Papua, that involved local Christian and Muslim groups.
Badrodin, however, said that the Bantul incident was not related with the Tolikara one as the former was triggered by a building permit dispute in the area.
Residents nearby the church in Bantul have earlier been involved in arguments related to the church's permit.
He also called on residents not to be easily provoked and to report any irregular activities to the police.
