T

he city administration on Thursday demolished buildings that stood on a 1,300 square meter plot of land in Rawasari Selatan, in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, beritajakarta.com has reported.

Central Jakarta Mayor Mangara Pardede said that the land was legally an asset of the city administration and that unauthorized buildings had to be demolished and residents relocated.

In the course of the demolition, however, councilor Elyzabeth Mailoa of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction attempted to stop the bulldozers, claiming that the land had been '€œdonated'€ and was no longer an asset of the city administration.

'€œI am a city councilor. I can report you to City Council Speaker [Prasetio Edi Marsudi],'€ Elyzabeth told civil servants and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) personnel present at the scene.

Elyzabeth placed herself in the path of the heavy machinery, but her actions failed to save the buildings from destruction.
