ENGKULU: Four people died over the past week during the Idul Fitri Islamic holiday season in three different rivers in Mukomuko regency, Bengkulu province, local authorities reported. The four victims have been identified as Helian, 38, Tia Mutaqkip, 14, Salsabila, 15, and Aura, 16.

'€œHelian, a resident of Makmur Island subdistrict in Ipuh district, drowned in the village'€™s river on Wednesday morning. The victim'€™s body was later found floating in the river around 3:30 p.m. local time,'€ Ipuh Police chief Adj. Comr. Rikky said, as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday.

The subdistrict is located 170 kilometers northwest of the province'€™s capital city of Bengkulu. Rikky said the victim had been swept away by the current while swimming with other villagers.

Tia, another victim, drowned at the Manjuto River Dam tourist attraction last Saturday when she was swimming. '€œThe victim jumped into the river from the edge of the 15-meter-high dam. She, however, never surfaced,'€ Mukomuko Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Andhika Vishnu said, adding that the victim'€™s body had been recovered on Sunday morning.

Two other victims, Salsabila and Aura, drowned in the Bantal River in Teramang Jaya district on Sunday morning. Like other villagers, the two students had gone to the river to take a bath because the wells at their houses had dried up due to a prolonged dry season.
