resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said on Tuesday that he would decide on the contractor for the first bullet train in Indonesia in August.
So far, there have been two countries, Japan and China, competing for the mega project, which will connect Jakarta and the capital of West Java, Bandung.
'We will decide on the bullet train project by the end of this month after receiving assessments from consultants,' Jokowi said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The president elaborated saying the assessments would include calculations on financing, technical matters and technology.
'We will also take into account the long-term agreement and the use of local materials,' he added.
On Monday, China submitted to the Indonesian government a feasibility study for building the high speed railway in a move that challenges Japan, which has already submitted its own study.
The government has not yet made any response to Japan's proposal, which estimated that the project would cost at least Rp 60 trillion (US$4.4 billion). (ika)(++++)
