tate lender Bank Mandiri has blamed a computer virus for the disappearance of money from an account belonging to a customer named Firdaus from Bengkulu.

Mandiri corporate secretary Rohan Hafas said that Firdaus lost Rp 49 million (US$3,600) from his account because he was a victim of '€œphising'€, an online scam orchestrated by hackers to acquire sensitive information such as usernames and passwords.

'€œWe have received Firdaus'€™ complaint and we have followed it up. We have found an indication that that Firdaus is a victim of online fraud carried out by irresponsible parties who attacked customers'€™ computers with a virus to steal their data,'€ Rohan told kompas.com on Tuesday.

Rohan said that Firdaus'€™ assertion that Rp 100 trillion was transferred into his account after his money disappeared was unproven.

'€œWe regret that the customer gave false information because that can have legal consequences,'€ he added.

Apart from an internal investigation, Rohan said that the bank had also reported the case to the Financial Services Authority as it is required to do in response to customer complaints.

However, Firdaus denied that he was the victim of phising practices, arguing that he was a long-time customer of Bank Mandiri, who would notice any irregularities appearing in the bank'€™s online system.

'€œThere has been no request for data synchronization to indicate phising practices,'€ Firdaus said.

Firdaus said he had also communicated with another Mandiri customer, Seprinaldi, who lost Rp 10 million from his account after making an online transaction.

'€œMandiri cannot blame the customers '€¦ this may happen because of weakness in the bank'€™s internal systems,'€ Firdaus said.

Firdaus said that he had also reported the case to Bengkulu Police. (ika)(+++)
