T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has said senior lawyer Otto Kaligis will soon face his first trial for charges of bribery involving lawyers and a court clerk from the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN).

'€œThe handover of the dossier of Kaligis'€™ case is scheduled for today,'€ said KPK acting deputy chairman Johan Budi as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said the KPK was given 14 days to compile charges to be brought against Kaligis. With the handover of the dossier to the Jakarta Corruption Court, he said, the anti-graft body was declaring that the investigation of Kaligis had been completed.

'€œThe KPK is focusing its attention on the PTUN Medan case,'€ said Johan, commenting on the anti-graft body'€™s rapid investigation process over the bribery case.

Since he was first detained on July 14, Kaligis has undergone questioning only once after he repeatedly refused to attend KPK questionings for which he had been summonsed, both as a witness and a suspect. Kaligis also refused to sign his investigation dossier.

Kaligis'€™ lawyer, Humprey Djemat, confirmed that the handover of his client'€™s investigation documents to the court was scheduled for Tuesday.

'€œThere will be many problems in Pak OC'€™s case. He refused to sign his investigation dossier; his medical check-up request has never been fulfilled. Suddenly, however, the KPK declared the investigation dossier of his case '€˜complete'€™ ['€¦] and brought the case to the prosecution stage,'€ said Humprey at KPK headquarters on Tuesday.

Earlier, Kaligis filed a pre-trial hearing request, with the South Jakarta district court, after he was named a suspect. On Monday, the KPK'€™s legal bureau requested that the court delay the pre-trial hearing for two weeks as it needed to collect expert witnesses and evidence.

Humprey questioned why the investigation dossiers of other suspects in the PTUN Medan case had not yet been completed, while Kaligis'€™ had been.

'€œAnother thing we have questioned is why Pak OC'€™s case was processed after the arrests of new suspects. Their investigation dossiers have not yet been completed; why then has the KPK completed Pak OC'€™s case and brought it to the prosecution stage?'€ he said.

Another of Kaligis'€™ lawyers, Johnson Panjaitan, said the KPK had continued its search for evidence against other suspects. '€œAs of last night, the KPK was still investigating the three judges and Gerry [M.Yagari Bhastara Guntur, a staffer of Kaligis'€™],'€ he said.

The KPK has named six suspects in the case: PTUN Medan chief justice Tripeni Irianto Putro, two other judges Amir Fauzi and Dermawan Ginting, the court'€™s secretary Syamsir Yusfan who allegedly received bribe money and Kaligis and his staffer Gerry, who together allegedly bribed the judges.

The case started with the AGO's decision to take over the investigation of the Bansos case which allegedly involved a number of North Sumatra provincial administration officials. The province'€™s administration filed a pre-trial petition against the corruption investigation conducted by the AGO with the PTUN Medan, saying the local Prosecutor'€™s Office (Kejati) had already investigated the case.
