hree former agency heads in Jakarta's provincial government were named suspects in an alleged corruption case involving self-management funds at the West Jakarta Water Management and Public Works Agency (PUTA) in 2013 with budget allocations of Rp 66.5 billion (US$4.9 million).

According to Attorney General's Office (AGO) spokesperson Tony Tribagus Spontana on Monday night, the three suspects, identified by the initials W, MR and P, had been named suspects following an AGO investigation.

W, MR and P are all former agency heads with West Jakarta's PUTA in the period April to December 2013. W is currently working as head of the province's Water Management Agency west flow system; MR is now head of the Water Management Agency east flow system for rivers and beaches; while P is currently head of West Jakarta's Bina Marga (highways) Agency.

Tony said that, based on the AGO'€™s investigation, the alleged corruption occurred when West Jakarta's PUTA decided on a self-management approach for four areas of its work: local infrastructure maintenance, road drainage channel maintenance, dredging and repair of channels and normalization of riverbanks and channels.

"In practice, the budget allocations were allegedly not in accordance with the accountability and finance reports. There were also falsified documents included, as if it was run by a third party," said Tony as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that, according to initial estimates, state losses resulting from the corruption reached Rp 19 billion.

On Monday afternoon, investigators had questioned three witnesses related to the case: West Jakarta's PUTA procurement officers for 2013, Nur Aprileny and Nofiansyah, and the agency's assistant treasurer for 2013 Geoffrey Rejoice Novena Sopija.

"These three witnesses are thoroughly aware of the self-management chronology, including the existence of a third party and material procurement," said Tony.

Investigators will continue questioning other witnesses and suspects. According to Tony, any further listing of suspects will depend on the investigators'€™ progress. (kes)(+++)
