Coordinating Maritime and Resources Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli said on Thursday that achieving President Joko âJokowiâ Widodoâs 35,000 Megawatts (MW) electricity generation target by 2019 would be difficult
oordinating Maritime and Resources Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli said on Thursday that achieving President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's 35,000 Megawatts (MW) electricity generation target by 2019 would be difficult.
Moreover, he said, the government still had to complete the construction of power plants of 7,000 MW left over from former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration.
'With the 35,000 MW electricity target, plus the remaining 7,000 MW from Pak SBY's administration, we have to develop power plants generating a total of 42,000 MW. This is difficult to achieve within five years,' said Rizal as quoted by Antara after a job transfer ceremony at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) in Jakarta on Thursday.
The former coordinating economic minister during the administration of former president Abdurrahman 'Gus Dur' Wahid said he would ask Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said to work together with the National Energy Council (DEN) to re-evaluate the 35,000 MW electricity program.
'I will ask the energy and mineral resources minister and DEN to re-asses the 35,000 MW program, selecting which part of the program is reasonable in order to prevent them from agreeing to quite a high target while in fact it is hard to achieve. So it can become more realistic,' said Rizal.
The 35,00 MW mega project is the prime program of President Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla's administration.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has determined 109 projects for a total 36,585 MW program. It says that 74 projects with a capacity of 25,904 MW will be handled by independent power producers. The remaining 35 projects with a capacity of 10,681 MW will be handled by state-owned electricity company PLN.
The total investment needs for the project is predicted to amount to Rp 1.13 quadrillion (US$82.27 billion), comprising Rp 512 trillion for projects handled by PLN and Rp 615 trillion for those handled by the private sector. (ebf)
