The South Jakarta District Court ordered on Wednesday the Supersemar Foundation, which is run by the family of the late former president Soeharto, to pay US$325.1 million to the state ' as punishment for embezzling roughly four times that amount in state scholarship funds ' within the next eight days.
'The losing party needs to abide by the court's decision, and pay the penalty within eight days,' the court's spokesperson Made Sutisna said, as quoted by tempo.co on Thursday.
Made said that the court would summon representatives from the foundation and the Attorney General's Office in relation to the recent Supreme Court's ruling. 'If they pass they deadline, we will seize their assets,' he added.
The lawyer representing the Soeharto family, Muhammad Assegaf, said he had not been contacted by the Supersemar Foundation regarding the compensation payment.
He said that no Soeharto heirs were involved in the foundation's management, adding that the party that should pay the compensation was the foundation.
'Though I don't know how the foundation would be able to pay that amount of money. Do they still have assets?' he said. (ika)(++++)
