Two terrorism suspects arrested in Surakarta

T

he National Police'€™s counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, apprehended two suspected terrorists during an operation in Surakarta, Central Java, on Wednesday.

The two alleged terrorists, Giyanto and Yuskarman, were arrested in the front yard of Al Marwah Mosque in the Kliwon market area after Friday prayers at around 1 p.m. local time. A number of witnesses said the police pointed weapons at the two before arresting them.

Surakarta Islamic People'€™s Soldiers (LUIS) spokesperson Endro Sudarsono confirmed the arrest of Giyanto by the Densus 88 squad, but said he could not yet give detailed information about the incident.

'€œI and several friends from LUIS escorted Giyanto'€™s wife to get confirmation about her husband'€™s arrest from the [Surakarta Police]. She wanted to know about why he was arrested and on what charges, and what would happen after the arrest,'€ said Endro.

He explained that initially, it was reported that Densus 88 had arrested three people, however, he could only confirm two of the arrests, Giyanto and Yuskarman. '€œThere was a report that the third person arrested was [someone named] Ibad, but I cannot yet confirm that,'€ he said.

Endro said there was some confusion surrounding the arrests. '€œThere was information that Giyanto and Yuskarman were arrested at two separate locations. It was reported that Densus personnel hit Giyanto with their vehicle and kicked him before eventually arresting him,'€ he said.

After the arrest, a number of security personnel searched Giyanto'€™s home in Losari and dozens of fully equipped police personnel were seen on guard in nearby areas around the Losari Square, Semanggi.

On Wednesday, local residents continued their daily routines despite the anti-terror operation. Dozens of Losari residents held various competitions to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Indonesia'€™s Independence Day.

As of Thursday, the police had not released any information about the arrest, or confirmed the incident. (ebf)(+++)
