Indonesia's hopes for a first world badminton championship in a decade were dashed after Tommy Sugiarto and Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka both limped out in the second round of the ongoing event in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Tommy was stunned by an unseeded player from Hong Kong, Wei Nan, 26-24, 8-21, 22-20 in a nerve-wrecking match, while Hayom bowed out to Son Wan-ho of Korea 12-21, 21-13, 21-17 at the 2015 Total BWF World Championships at the Istora Senayan Indoor Stadium.
Hayom had advanced to the second round without breaking a sweat after his opponent Kevin Cordon of Guatemala withdrew from the tournament.
'This is my most anticipated tournament, but it had to end like this. It is hard, but I need to recover from the disappointment as I still have the Olympics to focus on,' Tommy said. The next Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next year.
Wei Nan said he felt surprised by his win.
'It was a tough match. I didn't expect to win under such intense pressure on court, with all the fans showing Tommy extraordinary support,' 31-year-old Wei Nan said after the match.
After a heavy defeat in the second game, he said he thought he would just enjoy the rest of the game.
'In the third game, I thought I had nothing to lose in this tournament, and maybe that was the key to my win,' said the world number 20.
Taufik Hidayat was Indonesia's last men's singles player to win a world title back in 2005.
Indonesia's contention in the women's singles event remains intact, meanwhile, with Lindaweni Fanetri marching to the next stage.
Against Mitani Minatsu, Lindaweni was off to a shaky start before finding the nerve to eke out a 19-21, 21-14, 21-11 win over the world number 13 from Japan.
Mitani said that she had not been on top form, conceding many mistakes that awarded points to her opponent.
Lindaweni thanked the fans for their support and quashed talk of a title, saying that she would focus on each match in turn.
'Last year I reached the quarterfinals. I'm trying to go through to at least the same stage this year,' she said.
She will be paired against the winner of the game between Ozge Bayrak of Turkey and world number five Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.
In the men's doubles event, Indonesian favorites Hendra Setiawan / Muhammad Ahsan secured a round-three spot with a hard-fought 19-21, 21-17, 21-18 win over Fance's Baptiste Careme / Ronan Labar.
'We were surprised by their play. They were unexpectedly good. We need to prepare ourselves better for the next matches,' Ahsan said.
Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Angga Pratama / Ricky Karanda Suwardi also moved on to the third round after overcoming Puavaranukroh Dechapol / Kedren Kittinupong of Thailand 21-17, 21-13.
In the women's doubles Asian games gold medalists Nitya Krishinda Maheswari / Greysia Polii had to play three games to dispatch Malaysia's Lim Yin Loo / Meng Yean Lee 17-21, 21-13, 21-11. They will play against Japanese duo Shizuka Matsuo/Mami Naito, but Keshya Nurvita Hanadia / Devi Tika Permatasari were knocked out 21-11, 21-8 at the hands of world number six pair Ma Jin / Tang Yuanting.
Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth / Rizki Amelia Pradipta were also stopped by Lee So Hee / Shin Seung Chan of South Korea 21-9, 21-11.
