S

tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II plans to expand the capacity of five of its airports, enabling each to cater for more than 20 million passengers per year.

Airports included in the expansion plans, set to be finished in 2025, are the Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, the Kualanamu Airport in Medan, the Supadio Airport in Pontianak, the Minangkabau Airport in Ketapang and the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II in Palembang.

"We are currently acquiring the land," said AP II president director Budi Karya Sumadi on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.

Geographically, the airports represent the western, central and eastern parts of the archipelago, allowing people to reach international destinations more easily.

"Passengers will no longer have to go to Jakarta or other big cities to access international flights," said Budi.

According to Budi, the expansion is part of AP II's long-term development plan. As for the mid-term outlook, it is currently revamping the capacity and interior design of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (SHIA) in Jakarta, enabling the terminals to handle 18 and 19 million passengers per year, respectively. Meanwhile, '€œTerminal 3 Ultimate'€, said to be the most modern in Indonesia, will be able to serve 25 million passengers per year starting 2016.

AP II is also set to turn the sod for SHIA's express train development, the station for which will cover more than 12,300 square meters and will host a 12 kilometer railway with Batu Ceper Station in Tangerang as its main destination.

Budi said that SHIA will become a '€œsmile airport'€ where consumers enjoy only quality services. (kes)(+++)
