resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has delivered the first of three speeches planned for today, Friday, at the Senayan legislative complex in South Jakarta.
The speech addressed the state institutions' performance report. His second speech will discuss Indonesia's upcoming 70th Independence Day anniversary. Then, at 2 p.m., Jokowi will deliver the government's response to the state budget (APBN) bill for 2016.
The President's last official business for the day will be inaugurating a new integrated area of the legislative complex that consists of a museum, a gathering space named Democracy Square, a library, a public study center and a new building for House members and others.
According to a report by tempo.co, two former presidents, Megawati Soekarno Putri and BJ Habibie, were seen among the honorary guests attending the plenary session. Other guests include ministers, heads of parties and foreign ambassadors.
In his first speech, Jokowi called on the different state institutions to foster unity to allow for a stronger presidential system of government.
He also acknowledged that in the present, with independence well established, the war Indonesia faces is no longer physical but a battle for peace, prosperity and a happier life for the people.
"The battle to honor the people [of Indonesia] can only be won if every element of our country, especially state institutions, unites, and does not get held back by their own egos," said Jokowi as quoted by kompas.com. (kes)
