UPANG: A fire destroyed a coal-fueled power plant in Bolok village, West Kupang district, Kupang regency, East Nusa Tenggara province on Friday.
The blaze, which occurred at about 1 p.m. local time, was believed to have originated in coal that started burning on a conveyor belt and then spread to the plant.
'So, far there are no casualties. The fire was estimated to have caused hundreds of millions of rupiah in losses,' Kupang Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Michael Ken Lingga told reporters.
Michael said officers from the state-owned electricity company, PLN, managed to localize the fire and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the power plant.
The fire was completely extinguished in three hours after several fire trucks were deployed to the scene.
PLN's provincial branch general manager, Richard Safkaur, said the fire damaged one of the power plant's three electrical generators.
'The fire will not disrupt the supply of electricity in Kupang city and regency. We will repair it soon,' he added.
