UPANG: Members of the Timor Evangelical Church (GMIT) have asked President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to attend and open the church's 33rd congress in Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara, to be held from Sept. 20 to Oct. 2.
'Five hundred reverends from 44 classis within the GMIT synod from the islands of Flores, Alor, Sabu, Rote and Sumba, are fervently hoping that President Joko Widodo will attend and open our congress,' GMIT synod chairman Rev. Robert Litelnoni told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Robert said he had been informed that Jokowi would attend sideline events at the congress on Sept. 25, but said he was still holding out hope that the President would agree to open the event.
According to Robert, the congress will discuss the GMIT's working program for the next five years, as well as elect a new chairperson for the 2015 to 2019 term.
Rote Ndao Regent Leonard Haning, meanwhile, said Jokowi's visit to Rote Island would be the first ever visit paid by a serving president to the country's southernmost island.
