MBON: Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh visited Ambon on Friday, offering cooperation and scholarships to civil servants and businessmen in the city.
'I've come here not just to enjoy this beautiful city, but also to look at the possibility of cooperation with the Ambon administration. During the visit, I also offered five scholarships for civil servant capacity-building and business development for businessmen,' Singh said while meeting Ambon Mayor Richard Louhenapessy.
Richard welcomed the visit and said he appreciated the offer. 'The cooperation and scholarship will be useful for the city administration,' he was quoted by kompas.com as saying.
At the end of the meeting, Singh gave as a souvenir a comic book on the history of the Majapahit Kingdom, saying that the cultures of India and Indonesia had many similarities.
Many Indians lived in Ambon in the past, according to Richard. 'There are many Ambonese who look like Indians. Ambon is an old city.'
