ndonesian e-commerce players booked a total transactions value of Rp 3.3 trillion (US$247.5 million) during National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), which ran from Dec. 12 to 14.

The sales figure was higher than the Rp 2.1 trillion collected during last years’ event.

"The increase in the transactions value was triggered by the huge number of internet users and the increasing popularity of online shopping," said Harbolnas committee head Miranda Suwanto, who also serves as senior vice president of strategic partnerships at Lazada Indonesia.

This year was Harbolnas’ fifth, with sales and interest growth increasing every year. The annual event resembles Alibaba Group's Global Shopping Festival, the world's biggest online shopping day of the year held on Single’s Day, the Chinese holiday for single people.

Marketing research firm Nielsen Indonesia, meanwhile, stated that the 211 e-commerce companies participating in this year’s Harbolnas had enjoyed daily sales figures 3.9 times higher than regular days.

"Harbolnas 2016 attracted shoppers from middle- to lower-class segments as well as the 'shopaholics'. Most of them were attracted by the huge discounts and free delivery [for purchased items]," Nielsen Indonesia Director Rusdy Sumantri said.

He added that the fashion industry had reaped the biggest proportion of the total transactions value with 68 percent. (hwa)
