BNN's Suyudi said that North Sumatra and Aceh have long served as primary entry points for transnational drug trafficking into Indonesia. The main suppliers, he noted, are syndicates operating out of the so-called “Golden Triangle,” which includes criminal networks based in Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
BNN Chief Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom stated that Indonesia is witnessing a rising trend in transnational drug trafficking, with popular tourist destinations, especially Bali, becoming prime targets.
The growing number of women involved in drug trafficking has raised alarms among rights groups, who warn that many are being exploited as couriers yet remain criminalized despite their vulnerable social and economic circumstances.
During the raid, authorities uncovered 67 boxes containing 2,000 packages of methamphetamine disguised as tea. The drugs were hidden in secret compartments throughout the vessel, including within its fuel tank.
