View all search resultsThe research is aimed at finding out whether marijuana offers medical benefits that could possibly influence changes in government regulations on its production and distribution.
he National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is cooperating with Udayana University to research the medical use of cannabis to discover the medicinal properties of the plant, several parties have claimed.
“We [are opening] the space for discussion about cannabis based on research,” BNN chief Comr. Gen. Marthinus Hukom told a general lecture at the university’s Widya Sabha Hall in Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
“[The discussion is] not based on myths or personal testimonies of those who have used cannabis.”
Marthinus said the marijuana plant contains various substances with uncertain benefits in the medical world. Two of them are cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9-tetrahydrocanabinol (THC).
“The question is, which one is the medicine? Is it cannabidiol or tetrahydrocannabinol or something else?” he asked. “We are conducting research [to find out].”
He added that if the research shows that marijuana, locally known as “ganja”, could become a medicinal plant, his office would push the government to draft regulations on its use and distribution.
