B

ali has become a new key target market for South American drug cartels, which are expanding their networks in Indonesia amid a tougher crackdown in the United States, according to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).

The statement came after authorities arrested a Brazilian citizen at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on July 13 for allegedly trafficking three kilograms of cocaine into the country.

BNN’s acting head of narcotics eradication, Brig. Gen. Torik Triyono, said the Brazilian was allegedly part of a South American cartel and worked for a drug dealer in his home country.

“The fact that he trafficked three kilograms of cocaine shows how large the potential market for narcotics is in Bali,” he said on Wednesday, as reported by Antaranews.

The Brazilian suspect was charged with violating Article 114 of the 2009 Narcotics Law on drug trafficking, which carries a maximum sentence of the death penalty.

The arrest came just a few months after a 45-year-old Argentinian woman was also apprehended in Bali for smuggling more than 300 grams of cocaine. Authorities allege that she was part of a Mexican drug ring.
