View all search resultsBNN's Suyudi said that North Sumatra and Aceh have long served as primary entry points for transnational drug trafficking into Indonesia. The main suppliers, he noted, are syndicates operating out of the so-called “Golden Triangle,” which includes criminal networks based in Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN), in collaboration with the National Police, has seized narcotics worth Rp 2.6 trillion (US$155 million) in coordinated drug busts across North Sumatra and Aceh this year, targeting both local and international drug syndicates.
Newly appointed BNN chief Comr. Gen. Suyudi Aryo Seto said the joint operation was clear evidence of the government’s serious commitment to combating narcotics trafficking.
“This collaborative crackdown on drug distribution shows that the state is fully present and mobilizing all its resources to fight narcotics,” Suyudi said at a press conference on Friday.
“The war on drugs is a concrete manifestation of our commitment to safeguarding the nation’s future generations,” he added.
According to Suyudi, between January and September authorities confiscated a total of 1.7 tonnes of narcotics in the coordinated busts. The seized drugs included 1.4 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, while the rest comprised cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and “happy five”, a sedative commonly misused as a party drug.
In addition, authorities also seized several types of new or emerging narcotics, including 3.4 kilograms of ketamine, 7,357 vape cartridges containing liquid infused with controlled substances, and 846 sachets of “happy water.” “Happy water” is a liquid mixture containing a combination of illegal drugs that often includes ecstasy, ketamine and other psychoactive substances.
