ituated a stone’s throw from Yogyakarta, Purworejo regency in Central Java is rather unpopular as a tourist destination, though it is actually home to five villages designated for tourism.

The five are Somongari, Karangrejo, Kaligono, Tologowungu and Benowo. Those who happen to travel there, particularly to Benowo village, can opt to do these four activities as compiled by kompas.com.

Sampling traditional cuisine

Bajingan is among the must-try traditional snacks in Benowo. Made from boiled cassava and palm wine, it has a deliciously sweet and savory flavor.

The village also offers a delectable traditional beverage named baceng. A combination of palm wine and cloves, the drink is particularly suitable for rainy days.

Go hiking

Mount Kunir is one of the most popular nature destinations in Purworejo. The head of Benowo's Kunir Valley Tourism Awareness Group, Afdholudin, said sunset and sunrise from Mt. Kunir had become an icon of tourism in the regency.

In addition to breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, the mountain landscape also boasts panoramic views of Merapi, Merbabu, Sindoro and Sumbing mountains, as well as the peak of Mt. Tidar.

Chasing waterfalls

In addition to Mt. Kunir's panoramic views, Benowo is home to three breathtaking waterfalls: Curug Benowo, Curug Batur and Curug Padusan.

Curug Benowo can be found within a residential area and is equipped with a garden and pendopo (Javanese gazebo). A reading room for tourists is soon set to be available as well.

The other two waterfalls are within walking distance from Curug Benowo, allowing visitors to reach them by walking or taking an ojek (motorcycle taxi).

Religious tourism attractions

Benowo also has religious attractions comprising historic relics belonging to Prince Benowo from the Pajang Kingdom and his guardsmen's graves. Among the relics are vases, plates and a wooden umbrella. (jes/kes)
