Virtual Selangor International Business Summit 2020: Bringing businesses together, beyond borders

The global COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly disrupted normal business practices and activities. But this has not stopped Invest Selangor Berhad from conducting both its normal and annual activities to attract foreign and domestic investment to Selangor, a dynamic state with huge potential in Malaysia.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Invest Selangor Berhad, the state’s investment promotion agency, will hold its most prestigious annual business event, the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS), online for the first time from Oct. 14 to 17.

SIBS will focus on alternative solutions to provide an informative and engaging virtual experience, allowing participants to tap into the various opportunities originally developed for the onsite experience.

The summit was first organized in 2015. Since then SIBS has come leaps and bounds with the aspiration of making Selangor the “Gateway to ASEAN.”  So far, the event has welcomed almost 100,000 visitors from more than 50 countries, and accumulated a record RM1.143 billion (US$276.6 billion) in transaction value.

The 2019 SIBS hosted a record 787 booths, attracting more than 34,000 visitors and RM447.3 million in transactions, making it the most successful year since the event’s inception.

This year’s summit, despite being virtual, is expected to be just as successful as previous years, with focus to go toward creating a vibrant business platform for businesses.

The virtual SIBS 2020 will include virtual expositions, conferences and a webinar series. The four-day virtual summit will also offer online networking and business matching opportunities, allowing a larger group of business representatives and attendees to discover, connect and network.

“The digitalization initiative will help to reaffirm the smart state status in leading the adoption of digital technology in doing business and at the same time assist entrepreneurs to reboot and rise in this time of crisis,” Dato’ Hasan Azhari Hj Idris, chief executive officer (CEO) of Invest Selangor Berhad, said recently.

International appeal and regional opportunities

This year, the virtual SIBS 2020 will feature the three new components:  the Selangor International Expo, Selangor ASEAN Business Conference and the Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention.

The combination of all these events under the banner of SIBS will help complement the networking and engagement opportunities among attendees and other participants.

With an engaging series of webinars and food and beverage (F&B)-based exhibitors from the region, the Selangor International Expo 2020 (SIE2020) will focus on industry trends, covering every section of the food industry, from F&B products to the technology behind it, the science that aids it, the services that deliver and the halal component of the industry.

The virtual expo will be powered by an exclusive online business matching platform, allowing for trade and visitors and buyers to engage with top F&B brands virtually.

The Selangor ASEAN Business Conference 2020 (SABC2020), a regional business conference, will see a monthly series of  four webinars running from August to December, with the main conference scheduled for Oct. 14.

Under the theme “ASEAN: A Beacon of Light in a Pandemic-hit World Economy”, the virtual conference will provide a broad perspective on economic integration in ASEAN and in addressing core and current issues related to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), especially the detrimental effects of the global pandemic on the world economic scenario and ASEAN’s response.

“ASEAN can capitalize on its inherent resilience with a common regional response, dedicating its collective resources to rebuilding both at home and in the region,” said Dato’ Hasan.

The Gateway to ASEAN

Selangor is the most progressive state in Malaysia, and has close proximity to most of ASEAN’s key markets. ASEAN is home to more than 200 of the world’s largest corporations, with a combined consumer market of more than 600 million people, and  enjoys highly developed infrastructure, well-established investment and an advanced commercial ecosystem.

“Selangor offers a high-tech and business-friendly environment, with a comprehensive ecosystem of information and communications technology (ICT)-equipped innovation in Industry 4.0 and manufacturing hubs alongside many other competitive advantages,” Dato’ Hasan explained.

Positioned as the “Gateway to ASEAN”, the state government has invested significantly in showcasing Selangor as a premier regional economic, industrial and business hub, while pivoting toward global trends and innovations like Industry 4.0, Big Data and Internet of Things in line with the increasing digital transformation.

The Smart Selangor project is aimed at transforming Selangor into a smart state. The virtual SIBS 2020 is one of the state’s key initiatives for achieving this goal, making it the first state-led virtual platform in Malaysia to inspire the future of business and build a brighter tomorrow and today.
