he unforeseen and prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has caused an economic slowdown, but it has also driven the growth of pawn businesses, thanks largely to the sharp increase in demand for fresh funds.

Many individuals or families affected financially by the pandemic are reportedly in urgent need of fresh money or capital, either to survive or start their venture. One of the easiest ways to get funds is by pawning off goods or property, such as vehicle ownership documents (BPKB), mobile phones, laptops and television.

According to the Financial Services Authority (OJK), state-owned pawnshops and privately run ones have seen a sharp increase in asset value since the pandemic hit Indonesia. The total asset value of the pawnshop industry increased by 15.75 percent year-on-year (yoy) per November 2020.

The OJK has also reportedly relaxed a regulation pertaining to the opening of new branches that pawnshops are looking forward to.

To take advantage of the growing pawn market, privately owned pawnshop PT Gadai ValueMax Indonesia was established, with the OJK providing a license to run the pawnshop business in June 2021, Gadai ValueMax said in a statement.

The presence of privately run pawnshop Gadai ValueMax as a new player in the pawn business would lead to increasingly fierce competition in the industry.

“But from another side, this will also provide customers with more attractive options for pawn services. They will choose one that provides the best services for them,” it said.

The economic woes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have not affected the pawn business climate as both business players and the people are in need of fresh money, according to Gadai ValueMax.

In its initial phase, Gadai ValueMax is operating two outlets, located at Plaza Asia in South Jakarta and in Permata Eksekutif offices, West Jakarta.

PT Gadai ValueMax Indonesia’s Operational Director, Suyatno, said Johnny Wiraatmadja, a businessman with extensive experience in banking and other financial services, was a key person who had driven the establishment of Gadai ValueMax.

ValueMax is targeted primarily at business players and people in the middle-to high-income bracket, with the main products being pawn services with properties used as collateral, including precious metals or gold, electronic goods, branded accessories, as well as motor vehicles and supercars.

Gadai ValueMax offers loans worth billions of rupiah, comparable to the value of goods that customers use as collateral.

Additionally, Gadai ValueMax serves customers wishing to deposit their valuable goods or items.

Customers can reap the benefits from the service as the valuable goods are insured, which means guaranteed safety. In addition, the goods will increase in value as time goes by, which means customers are able to use them as a source of fresh money.

“And anytime the customers want fresh funds, they can just contact Gadai ValueMax, and the fresh funds will be transferred to the customers’ bank account,” said Gadai ValueMax.

Gadai ValueMax also provides value estimation services, helping customers estimate the value of precious goods or items that can be used for various needs, such as collateral for engagements, inheritance and other fee-based income services that the OJK has permitted.

In providing any services, Gadai ValueMax always follows the standards set by the OJK, positioning itself as a trusted service partner with a working culture that is semangat (passion), has integritas (integrity), is accountable and professional (SIAP). All of these services are provided in a fast, easy, safe and satisfactory manner.
