T

he COVID-19 pandemic, which has entered its second year, has had a significant impact on all layers of society, and children are no exception. Many have been orphaned as a result of the pandemic.

As a human organization with child protection as one of its major concerns, Human Initiative has distributed aid to orphans in Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi).

The aid packages consisted of educational scholarships, food, hygiene supplies and protective gear in the form of masks and hand sanitizers. The beneficiaries of the aid were aged 4 to 17.

The aid was distributed door-to-door by three Human Initiative volunteers to 39 child beneficiaries in 22 locations in Greater Jakarta on Aug. 15 and 16.

Four-year-old Azril Rahandrika, one of the beneficiaries, was very pleased to get the package that Human Initiative gave.

“With enthusiasm, he immediately opened the package. He smiled broadly and was very happy with it. Azril is motherless because his mother died of COVID-19,” said Human Initiative volunteer Salimah.

The distribution ran smoothly despite the slight challenge that the volunteer team faced in finding the addresses of the houses where the orphans lived, with most located on small alleys and in densely populated kampung.

But the challenge did not diminish the volunteer team’s spirit in performing the mandate given by Sahabat Inisiator members who had donated to assist COVID-19-affected orphans. “The struggle to seek addresses in the corners of the city has paid off. The orphans and their families welcomed us with smiles of happiness at receiving the aid packages,” Salimah said.

Human Initiative has Orang Tua Asuh/OTA (Foster Parents) programs – education and fostering aid for orphans affected by COVID-19 under the concept of foster parents or foster brothers or sisters with a participative and collaborative pattern by forming a child-friendly family environment.

In this effort, Human Initiative has asked Sahabat Inisiator to join the OTA Human Initiative program.
