ince its inception in 2019, Indonesia Menuju Broadway (Indonesia goes to Broadway) of www.indonesiakaya.com has provided training for dozens of artists and art enthusiasts in theater in Indonesia. Now, in collaboration with New York-based Passport to Broadway, Indonesia Menuju Broadway is giving 13 people the chance to receive training from the heart of the theater world in New York, the United States.

Indonesia Menuju Broadway 2021 presented its intensive Online and Offline Musical Theater Conservatory program using a syllabus adapted from the lessons of conservatory schools in the US and experienced local teachers. The program taught acting, vocals and dance virtually for over a year, starting in November of last year.

Participants were given the exclusive chance to learn online with Passport to Broadway, working with esteemed teachers such as Amy Weinstein, Stephen Brotebeck, Seth Weinstein and Catherine Vaughn – masters in the art of the stage. In addition, participants were given acting lessons by Venytha Yoshiantini and Putri Indam Kamila. Putri was a previous recipient of the Indonesia Menuju Broadway award and received training in New York in 2019. She is currently playing Iis in the play Nurbaya by Garin Nugroho, which was also produced by Venytha.

Venytha holds a degree in musical theatre from Lasalle College of the Arts and a diploma in theater from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Currently, she is a director at Teater Musikal Nusantara (TEMAN) and is part of the team that brought Broadway plays such as Hairspray and Into the Woods to Indonesia.

“For those of you who have a dream to become a stage artist, education can certainly be the first step to achieve that reality. I'm very grateful for the presence of Indonesia Menuju Broadway, which is very accessible for friends in Indonesia with present material almost equivalent to the first year of conservatory school in New York, and teachers directly from Broadway, it's a blessing that these lessons can be accessed in their own country!” she said.

“Producing and participating in a musical production is a joy for me. This field encourages me to improve myself through constantly learning so that the music I present on stage can strengthen the emotions of the characters that I bring, be it feelings of joy, sadness or any other emotion,” said Andrea Miranda, one of the teachers of music and vocals in the program. “I learn as much as I can from different sources and now, through Indonesia Menuju Broadway, it allows me to share my knowledge with friends who also have an interest in the Broadway world.”

Other instructors include Dani Dumadi, a vocal art master with experience in Indonesia, the US and the United Kingdom. Ufa Sofura, Pasha Prakasa and Ayu Gurnitha are appointed as choreographers; all dancers who received training in the Big Apple themselves.

“All the materials are precise in such a way that it allows the participants to learn from the best, and acquire sufficient knowledge to improve the standards and quality of Indonesian stage artists,” said Renitasari Adrian, program director at www.indonesiakaya.com.
