uring the month of April, the customs and excise offices in Jakarta, Merauke and East Java carried out the destruction of illegal goods that had entered their regions.
According to Hatta Wardhana, the subdirector of public relations and customs information, the Jakarta Customs and Excise Office destroyed goods seized in cases prosecuted in 2019-2021 with the Finance Minister’s approval through the Directorate General of State Assets Management.
The disposal of illicit goods took place at PT Mukti Mandiri Lestari in Bekasi, West Java, in collaboration with the state assets and information systems directorates, the Jakarta State Assets Management Office and the Jakarta Public Property and Auction Services Office II.
Among the items that were destroyed were 7,787 bottles of alcoholic beverages of various types and brands, 20 jerry cans of ciu (cassava alcohol), 1,006,878 cigarettes of various brands and classes, 1,759 cigars of various brands, 1,970 grams of tobacco leaves, 11,255 closed e-cigarette cartridges, 44,679 open e-cigarettes and 9,320 solid e-cigarettes.
The value of the destroyed items reached an estimated Rp 11.88 million (US$817,800), with potential state losses of an estimated Rp 2.6 million ($179,180).
In addition, the East Java Customs and Excise Office I and the East Java branch of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) destroyed illicit drugs on April 28.
“The customs office often works together with BNN in cracking down on drug smuggling. Last month, we destroyed 377.07 grams of methamphetamine and 835.92 grams of marijuana,” explained Hatta, adding that the drug disposal was directly authorized by East Java BBN head Brig. Gen. Mohamad Aris Purnomo.
Meanwhile, the Merauke Police and the Indonesian Military’s 11th Main Naval Base (Lantamal XI) seized sea cucumbers during a raid.
"On April 27, 2022, the Merauke Customs and Excise Office witnessed the destruction of 131 kilograms of sea cucumbers. This demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement officers in protecting the border, and we expect to see increased synergy between customs officials and other law enforcement officers," said Hatta.
“[Illicit goods] Disposal is a state security measure to destroy illegal or noncompliant goods and products,” he added.
“We hope this will deter more perpetrators and at the same time, encourage synergy between government agencies in protecting the public from illegal goods.”
