S

idoarjo, East Java, Customs and Excise has continued its action against illegal cigarettes by thwarting two attempts to send excisable goods (BKC) for tobacco products (HT) in the form of cigarettes with fake excise stamps and no excise tapes/plain cigarettes attached.

The head of the Sidoarjo Customs Office, Pantjoro Agung, said on Thursday that customs officers thwarted the shipment of 480,000 cigarettes with fake excise stamps packaged inside thirty cartons on Jalan Kenjeran, Surabaya on May 17.

"From the secured evidence, the value of the goods was estimated at Rp 547.2 million (US$37,155.38), while the estimated state loss that was avoided from the distribution of these illegal cigarettes was at Rp 288 million," he said.

On May 14,  officers also managed to thwart the delivery of 160,000 cigarettes packaged inside 10 cartons, with an estimated value of Rp 182.4 million. The action avoided an estimated state loss of Rp 96 million.

"The two cigarette shipments use buses going through the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road. We are currently conducting further investigations to capture other suspects as well as anticipate other distribution methods," Panjoro said.

He also ensured that Sidoarjo Customs and Excise officers had carried out the administrative process  by issuing a letter of prosecution and other supporting reports in every action taken.

According to Pantjoro, the law enforcement efforts carried out in a planned and sustainable manner are evidence of Customs' efforts in carrying out its function as community protector.

"By cracking down on illegal cigarettes, Customs and Excise fulfills its duties and functions to protect the public from the dangers of illegal goods. In addition, this action can also secure state revenues in the excise sector, while also supporting the sustainability of the legal cigarette industry in Indonesia by providing a healthy business climate," he concluded.
