Two regional customs offices seize millions of rupiah worth of illegal cigarettes

The Customs and Excise Office has once again walked the talk when it comes to battling illegal cigarettes.

The Malang Customs Office intercepted a shipment of illegal cigarettes transported by truck from Gondanglegi, Malang regency, to the Madyopuro toll gate in Malang city on Thursday.

“Malang Customs Office personnel received information about the shipment of the illegal cigarettes earlier and followed it up by tracking down the [suspected perpetrators]. Upon finding the truck, the officers chased after it and asked the driver to stop,” said Malang Customs Office head Gunawan Tri Wibowo.

The officers seized various brands of machine-made clove cigarettes, totaling 46,400 cigarette packs or some 928,000 individual cigarettes without excise marks.

The truck’s driver said the cigarettes were to be sent to Solo, Central Java. The sale of the illegal cigarettes would have resulted in state losses of Rp 556 million with an estimated value of Rp 324 million.

Similarly, on May 11, the Kediri Customs Office successfully foiled the shipment of illegal cigarettes at the kilometer 686 exit of the Mojokerto-Jombang Toll Road in Jombang regency.

“We detected a plan to ship illegal cigarettes from East Java to Central Java passing through a segment of Trans-Java Toll Road using a truck,” said an officer at the Kediri Customs Office.

The Customs Office secured 1,920,000 machine-made clove cigarettes without excise marks, worth Rp 2.1 billion, averting state losses of Rp 1.4 billion. The alleged smugglers are under further investigation.

The successful seizure of illegal cigarettes has demonstrated the Customs Office’s seriousness in battling illegal cigarettes and securing the rights of the state.

The Customs and Excise Office asks members of the public to take part in the fight against illegal cigarettes in accordance with their capacities and respective roles.
