Human Initiative educates the public about disasters to increase self-confidence

uman Initiative's president Tomy Hendrajati underlined the importance of educating the public to help them increase their self-confidence in responding to disasters.

"The challenge regarding how to strengthen local leadership is people's self-confidence. Providing education on disasters for the people is an important key. If a disaster struck them, as members of the society, they already have the required capacity to respond to the disaster," he said.

Tomy spoke at the seventh Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction forum (GPDRR). The event was held in Bali from May 23 to May 28.

Tomy expressed the hope that this year's GPDRR provided an opportunity to increase Indonesia and the world's readiness for tackling the various ongoing disasters and calamities that might occur in the future.

The seventh GPDRR, hosted for the first time by Indonesia, carried the theme "From Risk to Resilience: Toward Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World".

The GPDRR, a United Nations (UN) official program, is held once every two years, but the seventh event was delayed until 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from Tomy Hendrajati, Human Initiative vice president of operations, Andjar Radite also spoke on the Resilience Stage during a talk show.

Other programs included panel discussions and an exhibition. In the presentation, Human Initiatives had the opportunity to share their experience in responding to disaster issues. The event was live broadcast on the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) YouTube channel.

Several NGOs also attended the event.
