T

he World Surf League (WSL) championship tour at Plengkung Beach (G-Land), Banyuwangi, East Java, officially ended on Saturday. Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan witnessed the grand finals at G-Land.

“I spoke with the WSL organizers and they said the event in Banyuwangi was the best one so far,” he said.

Just like the organizers, Luhut hopes that next year’s WSL will once again be held in Banyuwangi.

“We will gladly support the WSL organizers if they want to hold the tournament in Banyuwangi again,” he said.

Luhut added that his ministry would help build the various infrastructures at G-Land and Alas Purwo.

“Later, we will be making repairs for roads, electricity, water supply and other infrastructure, including the surfers’ camps,” he elaborated.

The general manager of WSL Asia Pacific, Andrew Starky, is also in favor of Banyuwangi being the venue for next year’s WSL.

“We had a blast here in Banyuwangi. So far, this is one of the best WSL events to ever be held. We thank Banyuwangi and the Indonesian government for the overwhelming support,” he said. “I hope to come back [to Banyuwangi] next year.”

The secretary-general of the Indonesian Wave Surfing Association (PSOI), Tipi Jabrik, also welcomed the notion with anticipation.

“We really hope that the WSL will be held again in Banyuwangi. Apart from having one of the best waves in the world, international events in Banyuwangi are always lively,” said Tipi.
