anyuwangi Airport in East Java has entered the top 20 of the 2022 Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA). The airport, along with other nominees, won against other 436 architectural works from 16 countries.
As shown on the official AKAA website, the Banyuwangi airport will be up against the Wafra Wind Tower in Kuwait, Tulkarm Courthouse in Palestine, Flying Saucer Rehabilitation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Le Jardin d'Afrique from Tunisia. To qualify for nominations in the 2022 AKAA awards, projects must have been completed between Jan. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2021.
“It is an honor to have Banyuwangi Airport nominated for a world-class architectural award along with dozens of other architectural masterpieces from other countries,” Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani said on Tuesday.
She also hoped that Banyuwangi Airport will be able to revitalize the region’s economy as tourists start entering Banyuwangi through the airport.
Banyuwangi Airport is the result of a collaboration with architect Andra Matin. Its unique design incorporates the shape of a traditional headband worn by the Osing indigenous tribe of Banyuwangi. Furthermore, as the first green airport in Indonesia, the Banyuwangi Airport has an environmentally friendly concept that focuses on water conservation, with a sunroof that utilizes natural daylight and a terminal roof decorated with live plants. The roof will also act as a way to distinguish the arrival and departure terminals.
“We are grateful that this joint project with the Banyuwangi regency has received global appreciation. Banyuwangi Airport isn’t just environmentally friendly but also rife with local cultural elements,” Andra said during a visit to Banyuwangi.
The Aga Khan Awards for Architecture are the oldest awards in its field. Held once every three years, the nominated works demonstrate architectural excellence alongside cultural aspirations, heritage conservation and improvement of environmental quality. The award celebrates not only the architects but also the clients, craftsmen, experts and all parties involved in the project.
Since its launch 45 years ago, the AKAA has bestowed awards to over 121 projects and documented nearly 10,000. Winners will not only gain the most prominent award in architecture but also a win a prize of US$1 million.
