he Customs and Excise Directorate General has the important role of supporting the public’s interests, as stated in Finance Ministerial Finance Regulation No. 171/2019 concerning the exemption of duties on the import of goods.
"The public’s interest is the interest of the nation and state and/or the interests of the community," said Sad Wibowo Erijanto, the head of customs and excise facilities at the Eastern Sumatra Customs and Excise Office.
The Palembang administration in South Sumatra, through the Public Works and Housing Ministry, plans to establish a community sewage treatment plant. The initiation is supported by the government of Australia through the Palembang City Sewerage Project (PCSP). It is aimed at improving the city’s waste management and helping preserve the environment.
Sad said the Eastern Sumatra Customs and Excise offers its support to the aforementioned project in Palembang, also known as the Sewerage Project Package A2-Construction of a Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant and Pump Station A2 project. He highlighted the wastewater treatment plant and pump house especially. The support is in the form of exemption from import duties, value-added tax (PPN), sales tax on luxury goods (PPnBM), as well as Article 22 on the income tax (PPh) on imported goods intended for the public’s interest.
"The exemption facility is granted for the import of goods in the form of a liquid waste treatment system that will be used by the Palembang government for wastewater treatment plants and pump houses consisting of 15 sets of goods with a total value of Rp 21.21 billion [US$1.46 million]," he explained.
These exemptions are intended to support the Public Works and Housing Ministry in the processing of the flow of goods, so that it can have a positive impact, including reducing the concentration of liquid waste in the Musi River and producing clean water to meet the needs of the people of Palembang.
