n realizing its commitment to developing the local community, PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) has established Ruang Pintar Pulau Santen, or the Santen Island Smart Room, on Santen Island in Banyuwangi, East Java.
In addition to the newly installed learning facility, the microfinancing arm of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) also planted 1,000 whistling pine trees at the popular tourist destination.
The Santen Island Smart Room, developed as part of PNM’s Social and Environmental Responsibility program, was inaugurated on June 14 at a ceremony attended by Mira Damayanti, the company’s Head of Management and Partnership Services, and PNM Banyuwangi Branch Manager Arif Sulistiyantoro.
The Smart Room aims to support and facilitate online learning for the children of PNM Mekaar customers, as well as children from the local community. The Smart Room is equipped with books and bookshelves, stationery, computers and internet access, tables and chairs, as well as nutritional snacks and handwashing facilities.
Ruang Pintar Pulau Santen is to run for one year, supporting underprivileged communities that have difficulty with online learning, especially on Santen Island.
“With Ruang Pintar, we hope to help reduce the burden on parents with children who are learning online. The facility is also expected to play a major role in empowering the community and increasing access to information for the children of PNM customers and residents of Santen Island, through the use of digital technology and the internet," Mira said.
During the ceremony, participants planted 1,000 whistling pine trees to maintain the coastal ecosystem and mitigate the risks of seawater intrusion, abrasion and tsunamis. At the same time, the trees are expected to increase carbon absorption, improve the island’s esthetics through lush coastal pine forests and improve Banyuwangi’s economy through ecotourism.
As of June 13, PNM has disbursed microloans totaling Rp 128.49 trillion to 11.8 million PNM Mekaar customers. PNM currently operates 3,673 offices across the archipelago that serve MSEs in 34 provinces, 443 regencies and cities, and 5,006 subdistricts.
