T

he Group of Twenty Sherpas gathered for a second meeting on 10-11 July 2022 in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, with an agenda to take stock of progress in the priority issues of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

The 2nd G20 Sherpa Meeting was cochaired by Indonesia’s Co-Sherpa ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani and Dr. Edi Prio Pambudi and opened by Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

In her opening remarks on Sunday, minister Retno emphasized that the G20 needed to work harder to address various global challenges to ensure that it remained relevant. Meanwhile, coordinating minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted the significance of the multilateral platform in providing concrete solutions to global challenges and in setting the path toward global stability, recovery and prosperity.

During the 2nd Sherpa Meeting, delegates from all G20 members, as well as invited countries and international organizations, gathered to discuss progress in all work streams under the Indonesian G20. Working group chairs briefed the delegates with substantive updates from their respective groups and initiatives.

The meeting was divided into three sessions:

  1. The chairs of the Health, Agriculture and Tourism working groups delivered their updates in the first session on Global Health Architecture;

  2. The chairs of the Digital Economy, Education and Trade, and Industry and Investment working groups delivered their updates in the second session on Digital Transformation; and

  3. The chairs of the Energy Transition, Environment, Development and Anti-Corruption working groups delivered their updates in the third session on Energy Transition.

Representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) also attended the meeting, presenting their outlooks on the global economy and the impacts of the current geopolitical and economic situation on the world’s energy and food supply chains.

In addition to discussing the three G20 priority issues (health, digital transformation and energy transitions), the Sherpa meeting also continued its discussion on concrete deliverables, particularly from projects intended to mitigate risks and benefit developing countries and small island developing states. These projects will be announced during the G20 Bali Summit in November.

On the sidelines of the sessions, the delegates participated in “Sofa Talk”, a G20 Sherpa informal discussion held onboard the Lako Sai yacht. During the discussion, the G20 Sherpas exchanged their views on a variety of strategic issues in preparation for the upcoming Bali Summit. Indonesia’s Co-Sherpa ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani and Dr. Edi Prio Pambudi also attended several bilateral meetings with their G20 counterparts.

The G20 is a strategic multilateral platform connecting the world’s major developed and emerging economies. The G20 holds a strategic role in securing future global economic growth and prosperity. Together, the G20 members represent more than 80 percent of the world gross domestic product (GDP), 75 percent of global exports and 60 percent of the global population.

Indonesia assumed the 2022 G20 Presidency on 1 December 2021, which culminates in the G20 Bali Summit on 15-16 November 2022.

Indonesia’s G20 Presidency, themed “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”, focuses on the three priority issues of Global Health Architecture, Sustainable Energy Transition and Digital Transformation. Various G20 meetings have addressed additional issues related to food and energy security in light of recent geopolitical developments in the world.
