Rimbawan Market: A bridge between forest communities and markets (..)

F

or Jika Chocolat and Rimbawan Market’s founder, Baldwin Jehano, chocolate has been an entry point into Indonesia’s unique landscapes and cultures.

“Chocolate has taken us on a journey around the archipelago, where we have uncovered the most amazing communities and forest products. Our goal is to become part of those local communities, which we are working with to empower them to promote their cultural heritage through food,” he said.

In Indonesian, rimbawan (forest stewards) are people who devote themselves to forests and forestry, people entrusted to ensure the wise care and use of forest resources to ensure their health and productivity for generations to come.

Rimbawan Market aims to build a bridge between forests and markets to empower rimbawan to preserve forests, together with the communities that depend on them, their traditions and their cultural heritage.

Rimbawan Market is a commercial platform working on both ends of the food value chain, curating the best products Indonesian forests have to offer, providing strong quality and sustainability assurances to a community of passionate and responsible food artisans, producers and consumers.

We have no doubt that great products will find their way to premium markets. We therefore work with local communities, from the bottom up, to develop the institutional and human capacity necessary to enable aggregation and standardization of production, and to link exceptional products and landscapes with customers increasingly demanding positive social and environmental impacts.

Florian Vernaz, Rimbawan Market’s chief sustainability advisor, noted: “Indonesia is home to some of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world. High levels of biodiversity and endemism translate not only into amazingly rich wildlife, but also into a wide variety of plants, trees and spices, offering an unparalleled quality and diversity of food products.”
