The G20 Education Working Group Spouse Program Supports Women As Leaders of Change in the Education Sector

Denpasar, Bali, 1 September 2022 - Through the G20 Education Working Group/EdWG Spouse Program, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (MoECRT) invited the spouses of G20 delegates as well as members of Dharma Wanita Persatuan to have a discussion with women teachers from the Teacher’s Program of Instructional Leader. By involving three women representatives from the Teacher’s Program of Instructional Leader from Elementary, Middle, and High School education levels that have now been entrusted with the role as School Principals, this activity also highlights the role of women as leaders of change in the education sector.

As part of the series of events for EdWG G20, the MoECRT held the G20 EdWG Spouse Program at SMAN 3 (a public high school) Denpasar, Bali, on Thursday (1/9/22) to host the spouses of the G20 delegates, inviting them to experience and gain an understanding of local culture.

In a video played during the visit to SMAN 3 Denpasar, Bali, Franka Makarim, Spouse of the Indonesia Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology expressed her hopes for the spouse program to inspire many others, especially Indonesian teachers. “Through today’s spouse program, I hope that collaborative learning combined with Bali’s local wisdom provides an enjoyable experience, which can be an inspiration for thousands of other teachers that are currently working towards bringing positive change in Indonesia’s education sector,” stated Franka.

The visit to SMAN 3 Denpasar consisted of activities that upheld Bali’s cultural values with the application of Swasti Prapta, Dharma Suaka, Widyatula, and Uparengga. The G20 EdWG Spouse Program commenced with Dharma Suaka, a traditional dance called Tari Puspawresti performed by the students of SMAN 3 Denpasar. Spouses of the G20 delegates also had the chance to interact with the students and participate in learning the movements of Tari Puspawresti.

Aside from cultural interaction, spouses of the G20 delegates along with distinguished guests also had the chance to take part in Widyatula (meaning “discussion about knowledge” in Balinese) together with the women teachers involved in the Teacher’s Program of Instructional Leader from Elementary, Middle, and High School education levels. The discussion facilitated an exchange of experiences and information about the recovery of the education sector post pandemic.

As the moderator in the discussion, Head of the Indonesian National Commission (KNIU) for UNESCO, Itje Chodijah stated that women teachers play a large role as leaders in transforming Indonesia’s education. “These School Principals are alumnis of the Teacher’s Program of Instructional Leader who have succeeded in becoming School Principals in public schools in Bali. The commendable acceleration of their career is surely due to their hard work in supporting learning recovery and becoming leaders of change in the education sector, which is a significant accomplishment from the Emancipated Learning (Merdeka Belajar) policies. By listening directly to their experiences and journeys, hopefully we can all be motivated and inspired to keep moving forward for the sake of the education of our nation's children,” stated Itje.

The Teacher’s Program of Instructional Leader, part of the Emancipated Learning policy, is a leadership education program for teachers in order to take charge in the students’ learning process. The program can play a role in taking charge and increasing the quality of the education sector.

Chair of G20 EdWG 2022, currently the Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel, and the Acting Director General of Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and Secondary Education of the MoECRT, Iwan Syahril also emphasized the MoECRT’s commitment to bring the gotong royong spirit in restoring the education sector at the fourth EdWG meeting. “The MoCERT continues to be committed to reimagining, rebuilding, and restoring the education sector in order to expand access to quality education. We also made this commitment a priority issue on the agenda of the G20 Education Working Group," said Iwan.

The visit ended with a tour around the school, and the delegates continued the Spouse Program enjoying local craft exhibitions and herbal medicine workshops to experience Indonesian culture and traditional values.

“I would like to remind you that there is no limit for Indonesian women to achieve any goal and take an important role in the world of education. I encourage women leaders in the world of education to remain enthusiastic in their work, and play a role in driving a better education ecosystem through various programs under the Emancipated Learning umbrella,” concluded Franka.
