or the first time, Indonesia hosted the Group of 20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting (G20 Energy Ministers’ Meeting) on 2 September 2022 in Bali. The meeting was attended by the energy ministers of G20 members and invited countries, as well as representatives from various international organizations.
The G20 Energy Ministers’ Meeting highlighted the importance of accelerating the transition to sustainable energy and strengthening energy resilience as regards the need to build a more resilient global energy system. The G20 energy ministers’ meeting focused particularly on the energy transition challenges of archipelagic countries and small island developing states (SIDS), particularly in the Pacific.
Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif emphasized the importance of transitioning to sustainable energy to promote economic growth and resilience.
At the end of the meeting, the G20 energy ministers agreed to the Bali Compact on the principles for the acceleration of a clean, sustainable, just, affordable and inclusive energy transition.
In addition, Indonesia also produced the Bali Energy Transition Roadmap, an initiative to ensure the continuity of the global agenda on strengthening international cooperation on the energy architecture. This document also sets out voluntary, multiyear actions to stay on track in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and lays pathways toward net zero emissions (carbon neutrality) in line with local conditions.
The results of the G20 Energy Ministers’ Meeting will be presented at the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit (2022 G20 Bali Summit), to be held in Bali on 15-16 November 2022.
The G20 Energy Ministers’ Meeting is part of the series of high-level meetings during Indonesia’s 2022 G20 presidency. Themed “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”, Indonesia’s G20 presidency has established the three key priorities of global health architecture, digital transition and energy transition.
The series of high-level meetings started on 1 December 2021, when Indonesia assumed the G20 presidency, and will culminate in the Bali Summit of G20 leaders. The 17th G20 Leaders’ Summit will discuss measures to recover the global economy.
Indonesia holds the G20 presidency until 30 November 2022, after which it will hand over the G20 presidency to India on 1 December 2023.
