oung talents at state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have a strategic role to play in the improvement of the nation’s economic performance. With akhlak (morals) as a guiding principle, working from the heart is a key factor in maintaining productivity.
According to SOEs minister Erick Thohir, the younger generation is starting to fill important positions starting from board of directors (BOD) minus one and up to directors. This progress will greatly determine the direction of Indonesia’s economic development, especially with SOEs’ position as the backbone with their strong assets and profitability.
Erick further expressed his hopes that millennials would always maintain their akhlak and would work from the heart.
“I work from the heart, and that is what drives me to begin and end the day giving my very best to also get the best results. That’s why we work using all that we have,” he said at the SOEs Young Leaders’ Summit Vol. 1 at BNI Tower in Jakarta on Friday.
The minister further reminded the young people in his audience to never limit themselves in terms of knowledge and skills. They must look out for new trends that emerge along with the developing economy.
“We have been given extraordinary abilities. It’s up to you to improve or let them stay as they are,” he added.
BNI director of corporate and international banking Silvano Rumantir added that SOEs had a unique role of maintaining the balance between value creators and agents of change. In other words, SOEs had to nurture business growth by mitigating risks while continuing to improve community welfare to achieve long-term sustainability.
“SOEs have a very critical role in national economic growth amid the massive transformation that includes business optimization and efficiency,” he said.
Silvano further explained that SOE employees under 42 had managed to occupy 5 percent of the seats on the BOD. Along with continuous talent development and widening opportunities for the younger generation, their portion in the board of directors is expected to grow to up to 10 percent.
“We are very proud of them, definitely. Also, we’re a unified SOE with twice the assets of Temasek. The income of SOEs have also reached Rp 2,000 trillion (US$ 133 billion) or almost equivalent to income within the state budget,” he concluded.
