rof. Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, president of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences as well as the chair of the Science 20, has said that the S20 is a platform for the scientific community from G20 countries to discuss and generate recommendations for G20 leaders on a sustainable and resilient global economic recovery.
Prof. Brodjonegoro delivered the remarks during the S20 Summit at the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta. The event was held on Tuesday and Wednesday. He was joined by world-leading scientists from various academic institutions in G20 countries with expertise ranging from the natural sciences to the social sciences and humanities.
The summit addressed the importance of science as a basis for policy-making, focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. It also highlighted the need for multi-disciplinary scientific collaboration in the effort to tackle global challenges that had become more complex.
The meeting successfully adopted the S20 Communiqué, which consists of recommendations from the scientific community to G20 leaders. The six priority issues addressed in the communiqué are as follows: the way forward for tackling current and emerging challenges, building resilient health systems, enhancing adaptive capacity of health systems to climate change, bolstering multi-disciplinary science and technology for pandemic preparedness and climate change, guaranteeing that people are at the center and strengthening the nexus between data-research-policy-practice for climate change, pandemic preparedness, and economic recovery.
At the summit, a number of prominent speakers also delivered their remarks, including World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; Coordinating Maritime and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan; and Education, Culture, Research and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim.
The head of the foreign policy strategy agency at the Foreign Ministry, Yayan Ganda Hayat Mulyana, expressed his appreciation for the S20 Communiqué. “Science 20 has played a key role and provided invaluable contributions to the G20. […] I fervently hope that as we move forward, we are able to enhance our cooperation on other possible programs and initiatives under the Science 20,” said Mulyana in his closing remarks.
The S20 Summit was hosted by the Indonesian Academy of Sciences. It was held after the S20 Pre-Summit on July 27 and 28 and series of conferences and webinars throughout the year.
The meetings under Indonesia’s G20 presidency began on Dec. 1, 2021, and will culminate in the Bali summit, which will be held on Nov. 15 and 16.
