The Group of 20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting was held on Sept. 26, 2022 in Bali, where G20 members, invited countries, and representatives from international organizations discussed ways to recover tourism that centered on people and local communities.
"Our tourism workers have worked over the past two years amid so many challenges. We owe it to them to do everything in our power so tourism can fully recover,” Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno told the assembled delegates.
Sandiaga emphasized the importance of fostering the green transition in tourism to preserve the future of the industry. “This transition offers significant opportunities for tourism growth and job creation that we must seize,” he told the meeting.
The discussions also highlighted the strategic importance of tourism in inclusive economic recovery, as the industry plays a unique role in providing opportunities, and the need to ensure safe and seamless cross-border travel toward recovery.
The G20 tourism ministers agreed to the Bali Guidelines on “Strengthening Communities and MSMEs as Tourism Transformation Agents: A People-Centered Recovery”, comprising recommendations to accelerate tourism recovery through five action areas: (i) human capital; (ii) innovation, digitalization and the creative economy; (iii) women and youth empowerment; (iv) climate action, biodiversity conservation and circular economy; and (v) policy, governance and investment frameworks.
The G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting will be followed by an event to celebrate World Tourism Day on Sept. 27, themed “Rethinking Tourism”, organized in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting is among the high-level meetings held during Indonesia’s 2022 G20 presidency, themed “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”. Indonesia’s G20 presidency has established the three key priorities of global health architecture, digital transition and energy transition.
The series of high-level meetings started on Dec. 1, 2021, when Indonesia assumed the G20 presidency, and will culminate in the 17th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali on November. The summit is set to discuss measures to recover the global economy.
Indonesia holds the G20 presidency until Nov. 30, 2022 and will be succeeded by India for the 2023 G20 presidency starting on Dec. 1, 2022.
