BP Batam plants 12,000 ‘jati emas’

A

s part of its commitment to environmentally friendly development, the Badan Pengusahaan (BP) Batam has planted 12,000 jati emas (golden teak tree) seedlings together with other stakeholders.

The planting, part of the Batam Green 2022 program, was carried out alongside the 15-kilometer stretch of road heading to the airport on Aug. 24.

According to chairman of BP Batam, Muhammad Rudi, the planting location was chosen due to the fact that the majority of tourists arrive by air. In addition, the stretch of road is a common route for travelers to visit other tourist destinations in Batam, Riau Islands.

The golden teak tree became the tree of choice for the Batam Green 2022 program, due to its relatively fast growth, as well as the straight posture of the tree trunk, which does not block light from the street lamps, making it a safer choice.

At the same time, the trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air, reduce noise from vehicles on the highway and of course beautify the city.

The Batam Green 2022 program is a continuation of the collaborative program between BP Batam and PT Bandara Internasional Batam (BIB), a consortium of Angkasa Pura 1, Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) and PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) in developing Hang Nadim International Airport for the last 25 years.

PT BIB is responsible for a 350-hectare area, managing the airport operation and development, which includes the renovation, expansion and maintenance of the existing passenger terminal (Terminal 1), construction of the passenger terminal (Terminal 2), management of the new cargo terminal and development of a masterplan for Hang Nadim International Airport with the concept of Logistics Aerocity.

Going forward, PT BIB has plans to open new domestic and international flight routes, such as to China, India, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. The company also aims to be able to accommodate up to 40 million passengers annually.
