G20 Parliamentary Speaker’s Summit: Indonesia shines as Parliamentary Forum host
G20 Indonesia 2022

More than 150 participants, including Speakers and Members of Parliament from 24 countries, attended the Parliamentary Forum in the context of the G20 Parliamentary Speaker’s Summit held at the Senayan House of Representatives Complex in Jakarta on Oct. 5.

“We have been facing a multidimensional crisis, which has delayed our efforts to accelerate recovery. We believe that parliament, through multilateralism, can help to resolve global challenges, such as trade wars, food crises, energy exploitation and promote global advancement towards achieving sustainable development goals,” said Puan Maharani, who had inaugurated the forum.

The forum presented notable resource persons including the coordinating economic minister, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, advisor to the foreign minister on inter-institutional relations, the director general for New and Renewable Energy Conservation from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the director of Climate Policy Initiative Indonesia.

The forum discussed two agendas. First, the role of the Parliament 20 (P20) in the context of parliamentary cooperation to strengthen multilateralism in the 21st century. Second, the role of the P20 to help reach emission reduction targets and facilitate global cooperation on climate change.

“Indonesia is committed to achieving net zero emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. We have shifted to energy transition by co-firing power plants with blue ammonia, developing carbon capture and storage and advancing financial models for inefficient power plants,” explained Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto.

At the forum, the Speakers and Members of Parliament shared the importance of parliament in building trust and hope through dialogue-based mechanisms.

“The Group of 20 should be able to respond to the crisis. Indonesia’s G20 Presidency aims for impactful and concrete results. Both parliament and government should collaborate to show the world that the G20 must deliver in times of crisis,” said Muhsin Syihab, advisor to the foreign minister on inter-institutional relations.

The Parliament forum was held prior to the convening of the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20 Summit) on Oct. 6 and 7 in Jakarta.

The P20 is an engagement group within the G20 workstream, which was reintroduced by Indonesia to put forward a parliamentary perspective to global governance.

Aside from the P20, other engagement groups include the Business 20, the Civil 20, the Labor 20, the Science 20, the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI20), Think 20, the Urban 20, Women 20 and Youth 20. The Indonesian G20 Presidency is committed to engage with non-government participants and relevant stakeholders in the policy-making process.
