Background of the study
COVID-19 has had a huge impact on human life. A study was carried out to find out the impact of COVID-19 on human life. Most of the research during the COVID-19 period has been on health, economics and education. Research on health in the COVID-19 era reveals health solutions with vaccines. Research on the economy in the COVID-19 era reveals economic solutions with e-commerce, and research on education in the COVID-19 era reveals education solutions with online classrooms. Unfortunately, there is little research on ecotourism during the COVID-19 period. This study on ecotourism during the COVID-19 period in the world from 2019 to 2022 shows as many as 1054 research articles. It is not much different in Bali, there was very little research on ecotourism during the COVID-19 period from 2019 to 2022, namely 27 research articles. This research is important to provide solutions to the problems found in ecotourism during the COVID-19 period through increased ecotourism research. Against this background, this study aims to reveal the publication’s trends, the most frequent themes, the most influential documents and the most influential countries between worldwide ecotourism and Bali ecotourism publications.
Publication trends between worldwide ecotourism and Bali ecotourism publications
The trends of publication in this study are identified based on the annual publication and citation based-source analysis between worldwide ecotourism and Bali ecotourism publication.
a. The annual publication of worldwide ecotourism and Bali ecotourism publication
The study found that the lowest number of worldwide ecotourism publications was in 2020 with some 330 documents. This is strongly different from publication on worldwide ecotourism, the number of Bali ecotourism publications is constant year by year with some 10 documents. The publication of worldwide ecotourism trends in 2021 was some 1051 documents. Publication on Bali ecotourism is trending today.
b. The citation based-source analysis
From 2020 to 2022, based on the top ten most cited sources of worldwide ecotourism publication, the highest number of citations is on the Journal of Sustainable Tourism and the lowest one is on the Journal of Travel Research. For Bali ecotourism publication, the highest number of citations is of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. The lowest number of citations on sources, moreover, is on the Journal of Marine Biology. In addition, the Journal of Sustainable Tourism is the trending source for the publication Bali ecotourism from 2020 to 2022.
Most frequent themes between worldwide ecotourism and Bali ecotourism publication
With regard to worldwide ecotourism publication, the most frequently occurring theme was ecotourism, followed by sustainable tourism, tourism, sustainability, sustainable development, conservation, COVID-19, protected areas, climate change and biodiversity. In addition, the least frequent theme was biodiversity.
The most frequent theme with regard to Bali ecotourism publication from 2020 to 2022 was ecotourism as well. The most frequent themes were ecotourism followed by Bali, Indonesia, sustainable tourism, sustainability, sustainable development, local community, tourist behavior, Bali island and conservation. However, the least frequent theme was conservation.
Most influential documents between worldwide ecotourism and bali ecotourism publication
The most cited ecotourism publication worldwide from 2020 to 2022 was by Woosnam K.M. This was followed by articles by Han H., Buckley R., Chin M., Foo L., Phuah K., Tan K., Sharpley R., Font X. and Wang J. The document of Wang J was the least cited. Therefore, the most influential document on worldwide ecotourism in this period based on citations is the article by Woosnam K.M.
The most cited Bali ecotourism article from 2020 to 2022 was by Chong K.L., followed by Choi G., Ginantra I.K., Mutaqin B.W., Utami N.W.F., Mastika I.K., Fenitra R., Sudaryanto F.X., Suteja Y. and Wardana I.M. The least cited document was by Wardana I.M. To sum up, it can be said that the most influential document on Bali ecotourism was by Chong K.L.
Most influential countries between worldwide ecotourism and bali ecotourism publication
The country that has the highest number of citations from 2020 to 2022 out of 155 countries is China and the lowest is Canada. In conclusion, the most influential country in worldwide ecotourism publication from 2020 to 2022 is China.
With regard to Bali ecotourism, the country that has the highest number of citations from 2020 to 2022, out of 18 countries, is Indonesia. Meanwhile, the country that has the lowest number of citations from 2020 to 2022 among the 18 countries is Sweden. Therefore, the most influential country with regard to Bali ecotourism publication is Indonesia.
